The Governors of St Wilfrids
The main role of the governors is one of monitoring and evaluation to support the head and her staff. We help them to set and reach targets and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life.
We have a legal responsibility to:
- ensure that the National Curriculum is followed
- oversee the school’s budget
- monitor the condition of the school buildings and grounds, and
- ensure that Special Education Needs are met.
To do our job, we split into a number of committees, which address specific areas of school needs. Each meets regularly and feeds into the full meetings where appropriate. There are also other committees that meet from time to time to cover specific tasks – the setting and review of the Head’s performance agreement for example. There are several categories of governors, appointed by different bodies that have an interest in the school. These are Foundation governors (Appointed through St Wilfrid’s church), the Local Authority (“LA”), Parents and Staff. All governors have equal status, however they were appointed.
All the school governors are committed to maintaining the ethos and the high standards of achievement at the school. They are focussed not only on educational achievement but also on the schools other values, which are just as important.
Governors and the Clerk mostly carry out their duties during after school meetings and may attend training sessions and seminars to help them do their job effectively. They also go into school to meet with the Head and other members of the management team in order to discuss the subjects they have responsibility for.
We also ensure we fulfill our role in terms of OFSTED. Their inspection criteria outlines that we:
- Set the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school, engaging stakeholders and ensuring statutory duties are met.
- Hold the head to account for teaching, achievement, behaviour and safety; challenging and strengthening leadership; contributing to school evaluation.
- Ensure financial solvency and probity with effective management of financial resources, including the Pupil Premium, to raise standards.
The school's Acting Chair of Governors is Mr Alec Glover, should you wish discuss any issues regarding our school, he can be contacted via the school office.
