The Archbishop of York Youth Trust Young Leaders Award

The Archbishop of York Youth Trust Young Leader’s Award is a scheme for Key Stage 2 children which develops key leadership skills while also making a difference in the local community.
Following a launch assembly, the children follow a 6 week programme led by ‘Archie Bishop’ and his friends, which looks at different levels of leadership and how children can help to improve their world.
Session 1 – Leadership Skills
Session 2 – Inspirational Leaders
Session 3 – A walk around the local community identifying places of need
Session 4 – The National Community and Charities
Session 5 – The Global Community and Issues of Justice
Session 6 – Community Action Project – plan and run an event or project to promote or help the community. (Examples include a litter pick, tidying up an old community garden area, planning an event at a care home, sponsored event in school to raise money for the community etc)
This programme is run as an after school club for 15 Year 5 children. All children receive a scrapbook and stationary to complete their programme and also a copy of ‘Archie’s Challenge Grid’ – a range of 25 challenges of which the children must complete 5 at home eg wash the car, visit a neighbour, tidy up the garden etc.
The aims of the scheme include building confidence, motivation, teamwork, resilience, raising aspirations and motivation and it also supports the Church of England Vision for Education and SIAMS. We look forward to seeing our Young Leaders in action!
Community Project
As part of the award the children needed to complete a project to enhance the local community. Following a walk around the village the children said they would like to help to develop the area of land at the entrance to Grappenhall near the old Post Office. We were lucky to be able to work alongside the Parish Council to develop this area and had many discussions about what they could plant there and how it would look!
We hope you like our final product!
