Welcome to Year 6
Year 6 is a year where we work hard and play hard. We hope your child will discover talents which they didn’t even know they had – from scaling the dizzy heights of the abseil tower at PGL, to caring for a Reception buddy, to being under the spotlights at their end of year production!
Mrs. Page and Mr Calrow are the class teachers and Mrs Day is our teaching assistant alongside Fran Sixsmith who teaches the children music.
We visit PGL for a residential in autumn term and end the year with Enterprise and our Y6 production.
As with every other year throughout school, we would expect your child to read at home three times weekly (children who are on readingplus/IDL can also record this as one of the three reading sessions); tables practice is also a must throughout the year (TT Rockstars is brilliant for this). Reading should be logged on your child’s BoomReader account. In school, we encourage a love of reading through exposing children to a diverse range of books, through our writing, trips to the school library, enrichment opportunities and class stories. Throughout the course of the year, your children will enjoy books written by Oscar Wilde to Louis Sachar and dabble in the poetry of Wilfred Owen and Maya Angelou.
Spelling has a huge focus in Y6, so lists will be sent home every last week of the half-term. A random selection from these previously learned word lists will be tested; this is to ensure your child retains spelling patterns learned and can apply them to their writing. Spellingframe.co.uk is a brilliant resource to use at home to support with this. Spellings will be sent out via School Gateway App at the beginning of each half term and practised in school.
Homework does increase this year – they will have English and maths each week - but with your support at home and careful time management, the children will be prepared for their transition to high school. English will be set Tuesday to Tuesday (10 mins Grammar Hammer; 10 mins CPG GaPS and Reading book); and Maths will be set Wednesday to Wednesday (10 mins CGP book and a skills task).
