Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to the class page for Year 6.

Year 6 is a year where we work hard and play hard. We hope your child will discover talents which they didn’t even know they had – from scaling the dizzy heights of the abseil tower at PGL, to caring for a Reception buddy, to being under the spotlights at their end of year production!

Miss Sarjeant and Mr. Calrow are the class teachers and Mrs. Atherton, Mrs Day, Ms. Marrable and Mrs. Hilldrup will also work in Year 6.

We visit PGL for a week-long residential in Autumn term and end the year with an exciting trip to Waterworld.

Homework

To prepare your child for high school, we set English and Maths homework every week and we would expect your child to read aloud and discuss their books with an adult at least three times per week; tables practice is also a must throughout the year (Times Table Rock Stars in brilliant for this).

Spelling has a huge focus in Y6 as children will not be able to reach age related standard without it, so lists will be sent home and tested each week, and every last week of term, a random selection from these previously learned word lists will be tested; this is to ensure your child retains spelling patterns learned. Homework does increase this year – they will have English and maths each week - but with your support at home and careful time management, the children will be fine and prepared for high school.

  • Spelling will be given out on Tuesday and tested on the following Monday;
  • English will be set Tuesday to Tuesday (10 mins Grammar Hammer; 10 mins CPG SPAG and Reading book); and
  • Maths will be set Wednesday to Wednesday (10 mins CGP book and a fluency task).

Planners will be checked on Monday mornings and should be signed by parents to indicate how often and what pupils are reading.  Year 6 pupils are expected to alert their teacher to any messages contained within planners.
