Welcome to Year 2

Our topics this year are:

  • Giraffes can’t dance
  • Adventures of Columbus
  • Flying High
  • Lost and Found
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • I wish…

St. Wilfrid’s is a healthy school so we encourage the children to bring in a healthy snack for morning playtime. Suggestions include: breadsticks, cheese, fruit, plain rice cakes and plain crackers. They will also need a water bottle with a sports top (to avoid spills). The bottle must only be filled with fresh water.

In year 2 we continue to develop the children’s self-organisation skills by encouraging them to be responsible for their own jumpers, cardigans, coats and other belongings.

Homework is as follows:

  • Reading: we would really like your child to read three times a week and for this to be recorded in your child’s planner. We also encourage the use of Bug Club (an educational website relating to your child’s current reading level) as this offers a range of comprehension questions in a fun, interactive way.
  • Spellings reflect your child’s learning in Phonics. They are sent home on Tuesdays to be returned for a spelling test on Monday.
  • Maths and Literacy homework is sent home on alternate Tuesdays and it reinforces what we are learning in class.
  • Number Bonds- every week the children are tested on their ability to recall a number story (i.e. the story of 5- all the pairs of numbers which make 5) They achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold stickers for each story. After Christmas, most children begin learning their times tables in a similar way.
  • Every year, the children are given a choice as to which home learning project they would like to complete. The current topics are: Famous People (Autumn) Materials and their uses (Spring) and Nature around us (Summer). Children can choose which project to complete and details are sent out at the relevant time of year.
